The threat to food assistance just became reality
With the passage of the federal budget bill, lawmakers have enacted the deepest cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in modern history. This decision strikes at the heart of a fundamental value: that no one in America should go hungry.
For millions of people across the country — including right here in Silicon Valley — this means fewer grocery dollars and impossible choices made between food, rent, medicine and gas. The most impacted will be those already facing the steepest barriers: children, seniors, students, low-income workers and veterans.
If we can raise $25,000 from our community by midnight on July 4, an anonymous Second Harvest supporter will match the amount.

Thelda, San Jose
1 in 6 people
in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties receives food from Second Harvest.
Thelda turned 103 in April and was one of the original "Rosie the Riveters" during World War II. After the war, she and her husband, Ray, raised eight children in a home that Ray built — where Thelda still lives today.
Now on a fixed income, Thelda relies on her children for daily needs and on Second Harvest for groceries. Her daughters use the food she receives to cook meals for her.
Stories like Thelda's — of lives deeply rooted in our community — are a powerful reminder that no one should go hungry in a country that has the means to do better.

A generous donor has committed $25,000 to Second Harvest of Silicon Valley. 100% of this gift will be used to double the impact of your donation until July 4. Gifts received in excess of this amount will not be matched but will still help provide food to our neighbors throughout Silicon Valley.
